Thanks to the wild success of the Netflix series, Jessica Jones is returning to Marvel comics later this year after almost ten long years.
The character of Jessica Jones was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis with artist Michael Gaydos, and Jessica’s original series ended in 2004. The two also created Alias, where readers first met Jessica. Bendis and Gaydos have teamed up again to write a new comic with Jessica as the star. Cover artist David Mack will be back to render Jessica in all of her tumbled hair, leather-jacketed, blue-jeaned glory. On Netflix, series one of Jessica Jones featured a nasty pas de deux between Jessica (Krysten Ritter) and Kilgrave (David Tennant), her amoral mind controlling nemesis.
What’s New For Jessica
Jessica has appeared as a supporting character in other comics, including the series The Pulse, which ended in 2006. Because of the Secret Wars in the Marvel comic universe, huge changes have occurred in different storylines. Jessica Jones is the exact kind of hard-drinking private eye to solve the mysteries. According to writer Bendis, “We’re going to open up a book where Jessica’s world has blown up in her face. She’s at a place you’ll least expect her. You’re going to find all of her relationships have altered. And we’re slowly going to find out why.”
The popular and critically acclaimed Netflix series Jessica Jones aired in November 2015 and quickly became one of last year’s biggest hits. Fans especially loved the dynamic between Ritter and Tennant. Ritter was perfectly cast as Jessica, and Tennant’s Kilgrave was a masterful and chilling performance. His Kilgrave is a monster with a handsome baby face, an insecure man looking for love and compassion in between acts of evil.
A failed superhero who favours a black tank top and very cheap whisky, Jessica spent most of series one defeating Kilgrave and recovering from his hold on her. With the help of her neighbours, best friend Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor), and a superhero bartender Luke Cage (Mike Colter) she tries to rebuild her life after Kilgrave and moves on from his influence. At the end of series one, Kilgrave was dispatched and is not expected to appear in Series two.
Following the shows great success the series went onto to win a Peabody award in April 2016 and is hoping to add a highly prized Emmy to the list in September.
