David Tennant & The Proclaimers

Scotland On Sunday reported this morning that David Tennant is interested in a role in the proposed film version of Sunshine On Leith, the hit musical based on the songs of The Proclaimers.

The musical, which made its stage debut in 2007, focuses on a pair of soldiers returning from Afghanistan to Leith after a tour of duty to varying fortunes. Developed by Stephen Greenhorn and Dundee Rep, the musical includes a number of The Proclaimers’ best-loved hits.

The film version is to be produced by Black Camel Pictures, set up by Arabella Page Croft and Kieran Parker, while Andrew MacDonald’s DNA Films is also said to be investing in the movie. The production will feature huge song and dance routines around Edinburgh with up to 1000 performers. It is in the early stages of production and has not yet been cast, but it is understood that the producers are hoping to sign up Billy Connolly and Annie Lennox for the roles of Rab and Annie, the parents of one of the squaddies. Filming will take place this autumn and it is hoped that the finished movie will premiere at the 2013 Edinburgh Film Festival.

David Tennant is well known as a Proclaimers fan, picking them as one of his Desert Island discs, hosting them during his fill-in slots on Jonathan Ross’s BBC Radio 2 show and introducing their set at the Chelmsford leg of the 2009 V Festival. He is said to have expressed an interest in appearing in the film. However, he has also been strongly linked with the lead role in the new ITV detective drama Broadchurch which is rumoured to be filming from August.

The Proclaimers themselves are hoping to make some sort of a cameo. “If something was offered and we were available then we would be delighted,” Craig Reid said. “Maybe a painter or decorator or a traffic warden.” Here’s hoping that at the very least David Tennant will be able to do something similar.
