David Tennant at the NTA Awards

The short list for the first ever BBC Audio Drama awards was announced today by the BBC Media Centre and David Tennant is among the nominations for Best Actor for his starring role in Kafka: The Musical. The drama is the latest play by Murray Gold, best known to many as the composer behind a number of TV programmes, notably Doctor Who. Gold also composed songs for the play in which the dying, tubercular Franz Kafka imagines a bizarre world in which his life is performed as a musical. It was broadcast on Sunday 24th April 2011.

David Tennant will also host the awards ceremony which will take place in the Radio Theatre at London’s Broadcasting House on Sunday 29th January. He will be joined on stage by David Edgar, President of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, who will present the Imison and Tinniswood Awards.

David finds himself up against Damian Lewis for Giovanni’s Room, dramatised by Neil Bartlett, and Rory Kinnear for Flare Path by Terrance Rattigan, with Tom Riley gaining a special commendation in the category. Nominees in other categories include June Whitfield as Best Actress, and Cabin Pressure, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, as Best Comedy Drama.

The full list of nominees is in the BBC Press Release.
