US television network Fox has announced that they will be adapting the hit UK programme Broadchurch as an event series for the 2014-15 television season. Series creator Chris Chibnall will executive produce the series, which is said to be set in an American town, and write the episode premiere. Production is expected to begin in January.

The news was announced today during Fox’s panel at the Television Critics Association event taking place in California. Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly had this to say: “Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute — which is exactly what we look for in an event series. We’ve seen how well-received it’s been in the UK and we’re lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the U.S. audience.”

Ahead of the network’s Thursday presentation to the Television Critics Association (TCA), Fox handed out a series order to the adaption of Broadchurch, the U.K.’s most-watched drama of the new year. Series creator Chris Chibnall (Dr. Who, Camelot) will executive produce the new incarnation, with production beginning in January for a debut during the 2014-15 season.

Chibnall will pen the premiere episode and executive produce the series with Shine America’s Carolyn Bernstein (The Bridge) and Jane Featherstone (The Hour, Utopia) from drama producers Kudos. The series will be distributed by Shine International.
